Woodcuts and Wood-Engravings

Irene Gosse (?-?)
A Florilege: Chosen from the old herbals
Chelsea [London]: The Swan Press, 1931
Irene Gosse's Florilege was engraved by Gertrude Hermes, a British wood engraver, sculptor, and print maker, who taught wood engraving at the Royal Academy Schools until the mid-1970s. Hermes' work is described as severe, though one might prefer "dramatic." The author, Gosse, was related to the Darwins on the Wedgewood side of the family - little else has been located on her background or training.
