John Evelyn (1620-1706)
Sylva: or, A discourse of forest-trees, and the propagation of timber in His Majesties dominion...
London: Printed for J. Martyn, 1679

John Evelyn was an English writer and gardener. He lived through some of the most tumultuous times in England and wrote extensively about things political. However, he also wrote about gardening and the environment, being the first person to write about the growing problem of air pollution, specifically in London. He was an expert on trees, and his Sylva was written to encourage English landowners to plant trees in order to provide for the timber needs of the English Navy, who used the lumber for ship-building. Sylva was first presented at the Royal Society, of which Evelyn was a founding member.
