Although Claude Duret was a judge, he was born into a family of physicians. He is well known for several publications, most of which are historical or political in nature. His Histoire admirable des plants... is an account of mythological and mystical plants from history, beginning with the fabled tree of life from the Garden of Eden. Many of the fine illustrations are quite fantastical, as can be seen here.
